Unisma’s Lecturer Invented Crossbreeding Goat Resistance Detection Through Blood

The team of Unisma’s Faculty of Animal Husbandary has managed to invent detection of crossbreeding resistance of Boerpe goats through blood profiles. Through this blood profile examination, it is easy to get high-quality goats. This research is a manifestation of Unisma as a government partner in supporting the self sufficiency of meat for the nation.

The head of  research team of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry of Unisma, Ir Dedi Suryanto MP,  said that this leading NU campus is a government partner in supporting the nation’s self-sufficiency in meat. Food is a matter of the life and death of a nation; hence, the fulfillment of food sufficiency must be on its own strength.

He furher said that this time the goverment still imports meat for domestic needs. In 2019, for example, beef imports  reached 30 thousand tons. The primary cause of the high import of food is the ratio of the population that is not proportional to provision of meat resources.

The faculty of animal husbandry research team has done crossbreeding on Etawa goat and Boer goat. This crossbreeding results in BEORPE goat. The BOERPE goat has several advantages including its high growth of 0.17 kg / day. Birth weight reaches 3.7 kg, weaning weight reaches 20 kg and body weight at age 8 months reaches 40 kg. This certainly  will be very much favored by breeders because of faster body weight gain compared to local goats.

He also explained that crossbreeding resistance could only be seen in the 3rd or 4th generation. Examination of blood profile could cut off the generation to get good quality offspring so that they could be prospective elders to be crossed into the BOERPE. Crossbreeding goats with low crossbreeding resilience and high immune defense can be used as a reference in subsequent crosses.

This research was funded by HIMA scheme of Unisma involving 3 students of animal husbandry study programs. The research results have been submitted in an accredited National Journal. This research is a continuation of the INSINAS / DIKTI research which was chaired by Ir Muhammad Farid Wadjdi MP with members Dr. Ir Inggit Kentjonowaty drh Nurul Humaidah M Kes and Ir Sri Susilowati MM.

“This research examines BOERPE goat productivity. The BOERPE goat is the flagship goat at the Faculty of Animal Husbandry of Unisma which is now in the teaching farm. In the future, the Faculty of Animal Husbandry will also provide BOERPE lambs for the community so that it helps empower the breeder community with superior quality crossbreeding goats, “he concluded.
