
Universitas Islam Malang (UNISMA) remains committed to producing graduates who excel not only academically but also in national insight and noble character. As a Nahdlatul Ulama (NU)-affiliated institution, UNISMA instills values of Islam Ahlussunah wal Jamaah, shaping the students’ unique identity. dr. Erna Sulistyowati, M.Kes., Ph.D., Vice Rector I of UNISMA, emphasized the distinct character of UNISMA graduates. “Our students embody akhlakul karimah, guided by Islam Ahlussunah wal Jamaah. This is what sets our graduates apart from those of other universities,” she stated. On Saturday, February 22, 2025, UNISMA held its 75th graduation ceremony, awarding degrees to 422 graduates, including two international students from Saudi Arabia and Timor-Leste.
According to Vice Rector I, all graduates have been equipped with competencies relevant to their fields. Their education has emphasized excellence and integrity, ensuring they are globally competitive. “We also provide our graduates with strong national values, preparing them to compete at both national and international levels,” she added.
To further enhance their skills, UNISMA students receive additional training, including Microsoft certifications, foreign language proficiency (English, Arabic, Mandarin), research guidance, scientific publication training, and entrepreneurial skills development.
“These skills and competencies prepare our graduates to tackle global challenges,” she affirmed.
Inspiring Stories from UNISMA’s Top Graduates Su’da Huwayda, S.Pd., the valedictorian of UNISMA’s 75th graduation, expressed pride in being part of UNISMA. She highlighted how the university provided a well-rounded education that combined general knowledge with Islamic values. “Beyond academics, we received an education deeply rooted in Islamic principles,” she said. With a remarkable GPA of 3.97, she shared her success strategies: setting clear targets, staying focused on goals, and maintaining discipline.
“Success does not come by taking things lightly. It requires a clear vision and dedication,” she emphasized.
In addition to her studies, Su’da was actively involved in various organizations, which she credited for sharpening her communication, collaboration, and social skills. “Time management and prioritization are key to balancing academics and extracurricular activities,” she added. The second-best graduate, Fitria Cahyani, S.P., expressed gratitude for UNISMA, particularly for its strong Islamic teachings. “Before coming here, my understanding of Islam was limited. UNISMA’s environment and religious activities have deepened my faith and motivation,” she shared.
Meanwhile, Mochammad Dwi Oktavian, S.Pd., the third-best graduate from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), praised UNISMA’s academic support, particularly in teaching and research. He recalled his positive experience with his thesis advisor, who provided encouragement and guidance throughout his research journey. “My thesis advisor was incredibly supportive, making the research and writing process much more manageable,” he reflected. Looking ahead, Dwi Oktavian hopes UNISMA will continue expanding its academic programs to meet the growing demands of the education sector. “I aspire to pursue a career aligned with my passion, particularly in creative and innovative fields,” he concluded.
