
Universitas Islam Malang, through a team of students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Biology Study Program, has proudly won a Gold Medal at the International Invention and Innovative Science Project Olympiad (I2ASPO) in the Energy category, an international scientific competition showcasing innovative projects from around the world.
The UNISMA Biology Team consisted of five students from different cohorts: Alvina Putri Maharani (Team Leader), Aqidatul Izzah Putri Naila and Nazamira Oktavirani (Class of 2023), as well as Fasya Regita Aurelia and Tasya Bella Indriani (Class of 2025).
The team presented a scientific research project titled “Upcycling Aquaculture Sludge into Functional Biochar for Thermal Solar Panel Enhancement: A Low-Cost Waste-to-Energy Innovation.” The study offers an innovative solution to aquaculture waste management by converting sludge into functional biochar capable of enhancing the efficiency of thermal solar panels in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly manner. “We wanted to present a solution that is not only scientifically innovative but also practical and relevant to global challenges. Aquaculture waste, which is often overlooked, actually has significant potential to support renewable energy development,” said team leader Alvina Putri Maharani.
The journey to the international competition required thorough preparation. The team worked intensively on developing their research according to international academic standards, strengthening data analysis, and conducting rigorous presentation rehearsals. They also had to respond confidently to critical questions from the international jury with well-structured scientific arguments.
Under the supervision of Dr. Sama’ Iradat Tito, S.Si., M.Si., the project was recognized for its novelty, tangible impact, and strong potential for further development—ultimately earning UNISMA the prestigious Gold Medal. “This achievement demonstrates that UNISMA students possess strong research capabilities and are able to compete at the international level. Their innovation aligns closely with global demands for sustainable energy solutions,” he stated.
Support and appreciation also came from the FMIPA leadership at UNISMA, which has consistently facilitated and encouraged students to participate in national and international competitions. This institutional backing has become a crucial foundation for the development of innovative student research.
This accomplishment not only highlights the excellence of UNISMA’s students but also reinforces the university’s commitment to contributing meaningful solutions to global sustainability challenges.
