Grand Haul of UNISMA: Weaving Prayers and Knowledge for the Glory of NU’s Campus

Universitas Islam Malang (UNISMA) held the Grand Haul series on Monday (24/2), featuring KH. Dr. (HC) Afifuddin Muhajir, M.Ag., the Deputy Rais Aam of PBNU, as the keynote speaker. The event was conducted with deep solemnity, beginning with Khatmul Quran, Tahlil, Yasin recitation, and collective prayers.

UNISMA’s Rector, Prof. Drs. H. Junaidi, M.Pd., Ph.D., stated that the Haul has become an annual tradition at UNISMA during the second half of Sha’ban. This event aims to honor the contributions of UNISMA’s founders and developers who have passed away. “We hope that, as their successors, we can inherit their spirit in advancing and developing this university,” he said.

Additionally, the rector emphasized that the Grand Haul serves as a moment to pray for those who have played a significant role in building this prestigious Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) campus. He noted that UNISMA’s founders embodied the three types of everlasting deeds mentioned in the Prophet’s hadith.

“Beneficial knowledge, the prayers of righteous children, and continuous charity—all of these were fulfilled by the founders and developers of this university. As their successors, we always pray for them, and this great campus stands as a continuous charity that brings them ongoing rewards,” he explained.

The Grand Haul event concluded with Mauidhah Hasanah, a religious sermon delivered by KH. Dr. (HC) Afifuddin Muhajir, M.Ag. “May this event inspire our dedication and strengthen our commitment to propelling UNISMA towards becoming a world-class university,” said Prof. Junaidi.

Meanwhile, in his sermon, Kyai Afifuddin highlighted the Grand Haul as a form of gratitude from the living to those who have passed away. The UNISMA academic community offers prayers for its founders in the hope of receiving divine blessings. “Through this, we all seek Allah’s blessings so that UNISMA may continue to grow as an outstanding university,” he stated.

He also expressed his hope that UNISMA would continue to develop two essential fields of knowledge, traditional Islamic scholarship (salafussalih) and modern sciences. This, he believes, will enhance graduates’ competencies, making them scholars who not only master religious knowledge but also possess expertise in science and technology. “In other words, UNISMA graduates should inherit religious scholarship with the practices of salafussalih while also excelling in science and technology,” he concluded.
