Students of Universitas Islam Malang (UNISMA) once again broadened their global perspective through the presence of an international Islamic scholar. This time, the lecture focused on the concept of peace in Islam based on the teachings of the Qur’an. The session was delivered by the Rector of Universitas Imam Syafi’i Mukalla, Muhammad bin Ali Ba’atiyah, during the International Scholars Lecture program held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
In front of hundreds of students, Sheikh Muhammad explained that from the very beginning, Islam has carried a grand vision of spreading peace among humanity. Islam, he said, came as rahmatan lil ‘alamin, a mercy to all creation, a principle clearly reflected in the words and actions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
“Peace is one of the core characteristics of Islamic da’wah. It was this spirit that enabled Islam to grow and spread rapidly,” he stated.
In his presentation, Sheikh Muhammad also shared an authentic account of a meeting between a Jewish monk and the Prophet Muhammad in Madinah. During the encounter, the monk observed the Prophet’s face radiating serenity and peace. The story illustrates how Islam in Madinah promoted a mission of peace to all segments of society, not only Muslims but also non-Muslims.
“The excellence of our religion lies in it being a religion of safety and peace. Our Prophet, Muhammad, conveyed messages of peace as a way of life, both among fellow Muslims and with non-Muslims,” he added.
In his welcoming remarks, UNISMA Rector Prof. Drs. Junaidi, M.Pd., Ph.D., emphasized that UNISMA’s educational mission is grounded in instilling three core character pillars in its students. First, religious character, strengthening students’ understanding of Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah teachings and their practical application. Second, academic character, developing expertise according to each student’s field of study. Third, national character, nurturing pride in and love for Indonesia. “By reinforcing these three pillars, we aim to deliver a holistic education that produces graduates who are not only qualified but also competitive,” he explained.
Prior to the lecture, the event began with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Rector of UNISMA and the Rector of Universitas Imam Syafi’i Mukalla. Concluding his remarks, Prof. Junaidi stressed the importance of ensuring that the partnership moves beyond formal agreement.
“I will ensure that this MoU is followed by concrete action. The Head of the International Affairs Office will coordinate the next steps so that this collaboration can be properly implemented,” he affirmed.
