Universitas Islam Malang invited Dr. Berry Juliandi, S.Si., M.Si., Acting Director of Learning and Student Affairs at the Direktorat Jenderal Pendidikan Tinggi (Belmawa), to deliver a seminar titled “The Direction of Higher Education Curriculum Development Toward an Impact-Driven Campus” on June 11.
The seminar highlighted the urgency of strengthening curricula that are relevant, flexible, and capable of producing graduates who are job-ready and able to make meaningful contributions to society. “I truly appreciate UNISMA for its strong commitment to embracing change,” Dr. Berry stated during his presentation.
One of the long-term visions promoted by the Acting Director is the implementation of a lifelong learning system, where every citizen has the opportunity to continue learning without age or study-period limitations. To support this vision, the government is collaborating with global platforms such as ICE Institute, Coursera, Google, LinkedIn, and Microsoft.
He further noted that Indonesia is the only country within the G20 forum that has formally proposed and discussed this lifelong learning concept in detail. Dr. Berry also emphasized that three programs have consistently shown the greatest impact on students: Community Service Programs (KKN) or similar initiatives, curated and structured internships, and the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA).
Addressing the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI, Dr. Berry stressed the importance of fair and thoughtful regulation. He compared AI to a tool like a knife, it can be highly beneficial, but also harmful if misused.
“The previous AI guideline is no longer relevant. We are currently revising it to ensure that a new framework is in place to promote responsible AI use in learning,” he explained. He underscored that AI should not be prohibited, but rather utilized wisely to enhance productivity and the quality of education.
UNISMA Rector, Prof. Drs. H. Junaidi, M.Pd., Ph.D., warmly welcomed the directions shared by the Acting Director of Belmawa. He revealed that UNISMA is currently preparing to open new study programs focused on artificial intelligence and to expand the implementation of distance learning (PJJ).
“We are reviewing several study program nomenclatures related to AI with the aim of launching new programs. A task force has already been formed, and the team is working on all the necessary technical and administrative requirements,” Junaidi stated.
He expressed hope that this initiative will position UNISMA as one of the leading private universities that is responsive to rapid technological developments. He also added that hybrid learning has already been implemented at UNISMA and will soon be strengthened through full distance learning permits for several flagship programs.
