Universitas Islam Malang (UNISMA) marked Eid al-Adha 1446 H by sacrificing 22 cows and 29 goats. The slaughtering took place both on campus and across several partner institutions throughout East Java.
Carrying the theme “Impactful Qurbani,” this year’s program was designed to transform the ritual of sacrifice into a meaningful effort to strengthen social solidarity. Thousands of meat packages were prepared and distributed to nearby residents, educational institutions, Islamic boarding schools, and UNISMA’s partner organizations in Malang City and Malang Regency.
“Alhamdulillah, as in previous years, we have once again been entrusted by the surrounding community, our academic community, and institutional partners, including Rumah Amal Salman Masjid ITB,” said UNISMA Rector, Prof. Junaidi, Ph.D.
To ensure wider outreach, the distribution of sacrificial animals was carefully organized. Of the 22 cows, 9 were slaughtered on campus, while the remaining 13 were distributed and processed off campus, including at Islamic boarding schools, schools, and orphanages. For the goats, 11 were slaughtered on campus and 18 at partner locations.
One particularly meaningful aspect of this year’s qurbani was the participation of a non-Muslim donor who voluntarily entrusted a goat to be sacrificed and distributed to the community. “This demonstrates the level of trust UNISMA has earned from people of diverse backgrounds, thanks to the university’s accountability and social commitment,” Prof. Junaidi explained.
In his Eid al-Adha reflection, Prof. Junaidi also reminded the community of the importance of drawing lessons from the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Ismail (AS). He emphasized two key values embodied in the act of sacrifice:
“The two fundamental pillars we must uphold are unconditional obedience and steadfast patience. May this spirit flow through the rhythm of our daily lives,” he said. Through the spirit of “Impactful Qurbani,” UNISMA aims to ensure that the act of sacrifice is not merely a religious ritual, but a tangible expression of social care and shared humanity.
