ENHANCING UNDERSTANDING OF RELIGIOUS MODERATION

Universitas Islam Malang or Unisma held a symposium and webinar with the theme “Enhancing  Understanding of Religious Moderation for Teachers of  Islamic Boarding School Education “, (30/9).

In collaboration with the Ministry of Religion Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, this program involves 35 teachers and clerics from various Islamic boarding schools, with the hope of producing a roadmap in the development of religious schools as well as Islamic senior high schools in Indonesia.

This activity also presented the Chairman of the East Java Nahdlatul Ulama Regional Management, KH Marzuki Mustamar; Director General of Islamic Education, M Ali Ramdhani; and Director of Early Education and Islamic Boarding School, Waryono Abdul Gofur as resource persons.

Unisma’s rector, Prof. Dr. H. Maskuri, M.Si, said that as a pioneer campus for anti-radicalism and intolerance, Unisma is keen to carry out the mission of peace, harmony, moderation, and proportionateness amid differences. This is evidenced by Unisma students who come from 34 countries and 34 provinces in which about 5 thousand of the total 16 thousand students come from abroad.

“We have guidebooks and strategic matters that are part of inviting education to respect diversity. I believe that Islamic boarding schools actually have extraordinary principles of moderation and even become one of the pillars and foundations to defend the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia,” he said.

The Minister of Religion Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Yaqut Cholil Choumas, added that this activity can fill in the points that need to be enhanced related to religious moderation in Islamic boarding schools, considering that educational institutions and Islamic boarding schools are one of the strategic spaces in sowing the strengthening of religious moderation.

“We can see that this program is quite progressive and positive as a form of implementing the tri dharma of higher education amid Unisma’s efforts to become the best university in Indonesia,” he explained.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Religion affairs have just launched a book on strengthening religious moderation which contains nine values that are expected to be a guide for Islamic religious education teachers both in Islamic schools and public schools. The nine values include the values of tawasuth (moderate), tasamuh (tolerant), tawazun (balanced), and i’tidal (consistent, firm, and fair).

“Religious moderation is a perspective, attitude, and practice of religion in common life by realizing the essence of religious teachings that protect human dignity and build the public benefit based on fair principles and obey the constitution as a national agreement. So it is not religion that is moderated, but a way of practicing moderate religion,” he said.
